Question by Kevin O: What are the job prospects for a fresh graduate biomedical engineer?
I’m going to graduate from a US institution (SUNY Stony Brook) and am looking for jobs. I was a minor in mechanical engineering specializing in biomechanics.

I suggest that you go into the higher end of business which is about designing, making and delivering medical device technology. For example, pacemakers, catheters, stents, artificial hearts, dialysis machines, artificial joints, and vascular grafts are some of the devices that biomedical engineers help produce. You should also know that the device business is highly concentrated geographically with a relatively small number of high density areas that are the best places to find a job. The major areas with a large number of companies are:

Orange County, CA
San Diego
S.F. Bay area (specifically Silicon Valley)
Minneapolis/St. Paul
Boston

There are other areas that have an emerging biomedical company presence (e.g. Seattle & Salt Lake City) but they pale in comparison to the big ones above.
